What does it mean to live like normal Christians?

Few weeks before my husband and I got married, we took one of our last counsel on courtship with an elder brother in the LORD. Those times with him were awesome but one of the things he said to us that day as we sat in his veranda was, “If living as couples becomes difficult then, live like normal Christians”.

Those words haven’t left me since then. Entering into marriage I discovered that it was needed to live like a normal Christian beyond just the confine of marriage.

So, I wonder, what it really means to live like normal Christian. In our world today man people have their own definition of what and who a Christian look like. Many people have defined Christianity in the way that suit them. The matter is so confusing that people hardly when you say you are a Christian. But believe you me, the best life to live is to live as a normal Christian. So, who is a normal Christian?

He is one who has given his life to Christ. A Christian is a person whose life is controlled by Christ. A Christian is a person who is in grafted in Christ, he is a new creature, a new creature altogether, the old previous moral and spiritual condition has passed away, behold the fresh and new has come!

A man who has experienced this is a Christian. Therefore, a man who has not experienced this is not a Christian. It implies that there is nothing as such as being “Born-again Christian”.

A person who goes to church and faithful in church activity is a good “churchian” as a writer once called it. A churchian is not a Christian as the friend of the bridegroom is not the bridegroom, even if they seem to dress alike. They are different. So also, are the friends of the bride not the bride themselves.

The Christian way of life is the best way of life possible. Jesus came so that we can have life and have it more abundantly.

The Christian life is made possible if we commit our self to living it and GOD is committed to help us to live the life.

What does it take to live the Christian life?

It takes an interrupted and unhurried time with God; some people call it a personal quiet time. You will be successful as a Christian if you spend some few minutes of your morning to commune with God through bible reading and prayer.

Be grateful: Everything you won and has been given to you by God, everything you don’t have was because God loves you, be grateful to God for the things you have and the things you don’t have. Being grateful to God bring you to closer understanding of HIS love and sacrifice for you.

Fix your gaze on Jesus:
The bible says, “Looking onto Jesus, The Author and Finisher of our faith” (Heb12:1). Jesus is our perfect example of how to live as a normal Christian, not out pastors, not any spiritual leader but Jesus. When we fix our gaze on HIM, He will lead us through what we should do.

The Christian life is a life by faith and it is by faith we live it out.

Dead to self: The life of a Christian is one that is dead to self. Anyone who must be in Christ must deny themselves. See how Amplified puts it

“And He said to all, if any person wills to come after Me, let him deny himself, forget himself, lose sight of himself and his own interest, refuse and give up himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me, cleave to Me, conform wholly to My example in living and if need be, in dying also”

Luke 9:23 (Amplified Bible Version)

If a man is not yet dead to self, he will struggle with his Christian life.

Lastly, live a life of Prayer; Paul admonishes us in the book of Ephesians to pray, “Pray hard and long”. Prayer is a communion with God. A man that prays releases power and acquire power. Prayer brings down the manifestation of God’s power and equip us for the journey.

The Christian life is not as difficult as it appears, Jesus is ready to take us through it all we need to do is to submit to His leading, He is the Way, He won’t let us down.

In conclusion, I will like to end on this note: to live as a Christian, you need Ephesian 6:10-18 as your guide. I like reading it in the Message translation for it explains it well to me

“And that about wraps it up, God is strong and He wants you strong. So, take everything the Master has set out for you, well-made weapons of the best materials. And put them to use so you will be able to stand up to everything the Devil throws your way. This is no afternoon athletic contest that we’ll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keep a life-of-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels. Be prepared. You’re up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it’s all over but the shouting you’ll still be on your feet. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them you’ll need them throughout your life. God’s word is an indispensable weapon. In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out.”

Ephesians 6:10-18
